Wrong stock listing in TWS: check primary exchange

Quick answer

A stock symbol may exist on more than one listing. Compare currency and primary exchange as well as the ticker. The routing exchange and the primary listing exchange are related fields with different roles.

Step by step

  1. 1 Find the intended stock listing in TWS.
  2. 2 Open Description and note the currency and primary listing.
  3. 3 Compare the app’s contract mapping with those values.
  4. 4 Correct an ambiguous mapping using the app’s supported fields or symbol settings.
  5. 5 Resolve the contract again and check the full description before an order.

A practical example

Suppose a company has listings in more than one market. The same short name is not enough to choose between them. Find the listing and currency you meant to use in TWS, then compare that with the app. Keep the route and the listing distinct: SMART can describe how an order is routed, while the primary exchange helps identify the stock.

How to confirm the result The resolved contract should be the exact listing you intended to trade.

Mistake to avoid

Do not change the symbol to a similarly named security just to make a lookup succeed.

Common questions

Is SMART the stock’s primary listing?

SMART is a routing choice, not a substitute for checking the listing identity.

Does currency matter?

Yes. It helps tell apart contracts that share a symbol.
