Why a TWS quote does not show every trade tick

Quick answer

A watchlist shows price updates at set intervals. It may not show every trade. Check which feed your app uses: standard quotes or tick-by-tick data. The update rate can vary by product and region. A faster screen refresh will not change the feed itself.

Step by step

  1. 1 In Mosaic, open New Window → Time & Sales → Time & Sales for the contract. Choose the trade-price view if offered. This event list and a watchlist quote are different views.
  2. 2 Use the Time & Sales gear → Settings to check trade fields, quote rows and time zone. Check the contract and feed access too. A populated old list does not prove that a live feed is working.
  3. 3 Record a short interval with timestamps rather than judging by screen movement alone.
  4. 4 For custom software, ask the developer to confirm the requested API method and supported update behavior.
  5. 5 Choose a supported data path that matches the analysis you need.

A practical example

A screen can update several times a second without showing every trade that took place. Think of a photo taken at intervals compared with a full event list. If your task needs the event list, check that the app requests a supported tick feed. Making the screen redraw faster will not add events to a feed that did not send them in the first place.

Illustrative scenario, not a record of a trade placed during this review.

TWS Time and Sales window with time, last price, size, exchange and trade condition columns
This paper-session capture shows recorded trades for an example stock while the market is closed. It is not a live-feed test. Compare timestamps and data definitions before comparing it with an API feed. Captured in TWS paper mode on 3 October 2026. Open the image for full size.
TWS New Window menu with Market Depth Level II and Time and Sales
In Mosaic, New Window opens these quote tools. Choose the exact contract before comparing their data. Captured in TWS paper mode on 3 October 2026. Open the image for full size.
Time and Sales settings with quote choices, trade fields, columns and user time zone
Open the tool gear → Settings to inspect display choices. This example shows trade fields and no bid/ask quote rows. These UI controls do not change which API method a separate app requests. The settings dialog was closed with Cancel. Captured in TWS paper mode on 3 October 2026. Open the image for full size.
TWS stock Description showing SMART route, NASDAQ primary exchange, currency, contract ID, minimum tick and frozen data status
This stock is an example of the fields to compare. SMART routing and Primary Exchange are separate fields. The observed feed is Frozen and the market is closed; this is not a live-price or trading recommendation. Captured in TWS paper mode on 3 October 2026. Open the image for full size.
How to confirm the result Your expectation for update frequency should match the actual feed type.

Mistake to avoid

A fast screen refresh cannot make a snapshot-based feed include events it did not deliver.

Common questions

Is a slowly changing last price always a disconnect?

No. The market may be quiet, or the stream may update on intervals. Check timestamps and status.

Does tick-by-tick support cover every product?

Verify availability and limits for the requested product.
