Rithmic Margin Requirements: Broker Limits and Account Checks

Quick answer

Rithmic applies the risk configuration supplied for the account; it is not a universal margin-price list. Check the broker or firm for the exact instrument, quantity, holding period and current requirement. An advertised account size is not necessarily spendable collateral.

Distinguish the requirements

Requirement Practical meaning
Initial margin Collateral required to establish the relevant exposure
Maintenance margin Required level while carrying exposure under the applicable rules
Broker intraday concession A provider's conditional intraday requirement; it may change or end before the exchange session closes
Firm contract/loss limits Separate evaluation or funded-account restrictions; not interchangeable with a retail margin quote

CME explains initial and maintenance margins. A broker can impose additional requirements. Use the provider's actual margin schedule and documented account fields.

Before estimating how many contracts fit

Obtain the current product margin, relevant cutoff time and treatment of existing positions and pending orders. Check whether news, volatility, concentration or overnight holding changes the requirement. Separately check order-size and position-size limits. Passing one check does not imply passing the others.

If a hypothetical provider requires $2,000 per contract and reports $5,000 available for that purpose, two contracts would consume $4,000 before other constraints. This is arithmetic, not an actual margin quote or recommendation to use all available capacity.

Inspect the account without inventing fields

Open File → Trader Dashboard and locate the intended account. This session showed P&L and auto-liquidation headroom columns. It did not establish a usable margin-balance field or current broker margin schedule. Blank cells do not prove spare buying power.

If an order is rejected, preserve the full response and time. Reconcile current exposure and ask the provider which requirement failed before resubmitting. Do not automatically close an unrelated position or send repeated smaller orders to probe a limit.

Common questions

Does a low day margin apply overnight?

Only under the provider terms. A different requirement or earlier cutoff may apply.

Does account balance equal available margin?

No. Existing exposure, pending orders and provider calculations can reduce available capacity.

Is a prop account a cash deposit of its advertised size?

Do not assume that. Read the program agreement and account-stage rules.

Can an automation bridge override a rejection?

No bridge should be assumed to bypass the account risk checks.
