Connection and login

TWS weekly login fails after automatic restart

Quick answer

An automatic restart may still require a fresh manual login during the weekly sign-in cycle. If TWS reports a soft-token or permanent-token login failure, complete the broker login before investigating the webhook.

Step by step

  1. 1 Copy the exact login failure text and note when it started. Keep credentials out of the screenshot.
  2. 2 Open TWS directly and complete its normal login and any requested sign-in.
  3. 3 Wait for the trading workspace to load fully.
  4. 4 Check the API connection from the desktop app and check the intended account.
  5. 5 Review orders and positions from before the break before resuming alerts.

A practical example

A restart may open TWS but leave it waiting for you to sign in. The desktop app cannot finish its job while TWS is at that screen. Sign in through the normal broker flow and wait for the workspace. Then check the desktop app. A new webhook or a new chart alert will not solve a broker login that has not finished.

Illustrative scenario, not a record of a trade placed during this review.

TWS Market Data Connections with farm purpose and status, plus API client columns
The observed services are connected and the API client list is empty. Use this panel to read current status; it does not reproduce a disconnect or prove an app handshake completed. Captured in TWS paper mode on 3 October 2026. Open the image for full size.
How to confirm the result TWS should reach the workspace and the app should discover the expected account again.

Mistake to avoid

Do not save a sign-in code in an alert or a help ticket. It is not part of webhook setup.

Common questions

Is this fixed by turning off two-factor sign-in?

Use IBKR’s supported login process. Removing sign-in is not the remedy.

Does Auto restart cover weekly login?

It can restart the program, but manual fresh sign-in may still be needed.
